Fibromyalgia is a diagnosis used to describe a group of symptoms typified by non-specific muscle or joint aches, pains and stiffness. On examination, these may be muscle spasm tender points or “knots” and specific tender points found at the insertion of muscle tendon into bone.
A related condition that may be present with fibromyalgia is myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). These diagnoses are often associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms and fatigue.
A positive diagnosis can only be made after excluding other more serious causes for the rheumatological abnormality such as arthritis, depression or cancer pain syndromes. Exercise, counselling and dietary modifications assist with recovery, but few treatments exist that ameliorate the symptoms without side effects.
